Eight out of 10 funding applications were approved during the first quarterly meeting of the Creative Communities Scheme assessment committee held last month at the Kaikohe Town Hall. The scheme is an initiative by CreativeNZ to provide funding for arts and culture projects and events.

Successful applicants included music, crafts, stage production and eco projects. Those who were successful in receiving full or part-funding were:

  • Kaitāia MetalFest 2023, $2,500
  • Wonderland Glow Show Puppet Theatre, $3,000
  • Kaitāia Connections, $2,520
  • Soundgarden Concert April, $300
  • Tai Orooro – Tai Auaha, $3,100
  • Nature Craft Workshops by the Eco-Centre Kaitāia, $2,500
  • ‘Boy with Wings’, Turner Centre $2,530
  • ‘Boy with Wings’, touring theatre $1200

Two applications were declined, but committee members encouraged both applicants to apply again in the future. Those considering applying for funding are advised to follow the guidelines set out on the council Creative Communities webpage. Quotes, letters of support and basic financial statements must be sent in as part of the application. Details on how to contact a council Funding Advisor or Creative Communities Committee member to help with applications, are also listed on the webpage.

The next application round (Round 2) is for arts events and projects beginning after 13 June 2023 with applications closing on Monday 15 May. Go to the webpage for information about how to apply and for a list of funding round deadlines.

Two Far North District councillors sit on the committee team. They are Felicity Foy (Te Hiku Ward) and Tāmati Rākena (Māori Ward).
