Climate Change Roadmap

The Far North District Council Climate Change Roadmap April 2020 outlines a broad approach to climate change, including goals and associated guiding principles. The roadmap also presents proposed action plans in four focus areas involving mitigation and adaptation. These are:

  1. "Walking the talk” Council reduces its carbon emissions
  2. “Reducing our carbon emissions together” Supporting our communities to achieve zero carbon by 2050
  3. “Prudent future proofing” Council adapts to climate change
  4. “Developing resilience” Help our communities prepare for and adapt to the impacts of climate change.

Progress update

  • Council signed the Local Government Leaders Declaration in 2017 with a commitment to “develop and implement ambitious action plans” for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • Council adopted a Climate Change Roadmap in April 2020
  • Implementation of sustainable procurement policy in December 2020
  • As a member of Climate Adaptation Te Tai Tokerau (CATT), council adopted Te Tai Tokerau Climate Adaptation Strategy in April 2022.
  • Commissioned emissions assessment of the council and continue to measure this to review our progress.
  • Established a Climate Action and Resilience Team to advance mitigation and adaptation as identified in the Climate Change Roadmap.
  • Undertook a District-wide multicriteria risk analysis for Climate Change in November 2023.
  • Climate Action Policy was endorsed by Te Kuaka - Te Ao Māori Committee on 28 November 2023 and by the Council on 11 December 2023.
  • Developed a draft community adaptation programme in December 2023
  • Developed an adaptation methodology and guidance manual in December 2023.

Next steps:

  • Establish a climate action reference group to drive climate action policy implementation, develop plans, assess risks, and conduct monitoring and evaluation in early 2024.
  • Reduce council's emissions and support communities to reduce their emissions ongoing.
  • Implement the adaptation programme and start early community engagement in early 2024.
