Far North Libraries enable Dignity with free period products

The latest Dignity Impact Report has recognised Far North District Libraries for supporting the ‘Dignity’ initiative, which provides free period products across Aotearoa.

The latest Dignity Impact Report has recognised Far North District Libraries for supporting the ‘Dignity’ initiative, which provides free period products across Aotearoa.

The Dignity initiative started in 2016 to help New Zealand women gain free access to period products such as pads, tampons, AWWA reusable underwear and mooncups. Kawakawa Library joined the initiative in 2021 and all other Far North libraries joined in 2022.  The libraries are a ‘give’ partner, providing products to those experiencing period poverty. Women who can’t afford pads and tampons can miss out on education, work, and other key life activities.

The 2022 Dignity Impact Report noted that 13,912 boxes of period products were gifted in 2022 alone, helping over 73,018 people last year nationwide.

Team Leader for Kaikohe and Kawakawa Libraries, Megan Hindmarsh says the Dignity programme has a huge impact on our lower socio-economic communities in the Far North.

“Libraries are places where people don’t need to spend money to visit. The Dignity initiative supports this kaupapa and helps build relationships, support, and trust between library staff and the communities they serve. It has been a real privilege to partner with Dignity and share ideas about promoting it, to make sure period products go to those in need.”
