Hokianga first stop on the Election Tour

The ‘2022 Elections Tour’ started a week-long trip around the Hokianga yesterday with an interview on Tautoko FM.

The ‘2022 Elections Tour’ started a week-long trip around the Hokianga yesterday with an interview on Tautoko FM.

Host of current affairs show Ngā Muka Kōrero, Sophia Thomas, spoke to Casey Gannon from the council elections team about the October local body elections. The chance to discuss what’s different about this election on the community-run iwi radio station was the perfect start for a tour which aims to encourage Far North residents to enrol (Step Up - Tū Rangatira mai), get nominated for office (Stand Up - Tū kotahi mai), and vote (Speak Up - Mō te āpōpō).

This year’s Far North election will see the total number of councillors increase from nine to 10, it will be the first council election to use the proportional Single Transferable Vote (STV) system, and it will also be the first local election to include the Ngā Tai o Tokerau Māori ward. Four candidates will be elected to represent this new ward.

To help promote these messages, a specially branded ‘2022 Elections Tour’ van will be visiting community events, cafes and gathering spots in the Hokianga this week, including:

  • Tuesday 14 June – Rāwene Ferry, Manea Footprints of Kupe in Ōpononi, Waimā.
  • Thursday 16 June - Kiwikai in Ōkaihau, Kaikohe local cafes, the Kaikohe Market.

The van will also spend a week in Te Hiku from Monday 20 June, as well as other locations at key phases during the election campaign.

The 2022 election campaign is also being supported by a video in each of New Zealand’s three languages –Te Reo Māori, English and New Zealand Sign Language. Part One will be released as a separate segment on Wednesday 15 June.

Voting packs for the local elections will be sent out in September with the final day of voting on Saturday 8 October, closing at midday.
