Input sought on Far North waste management

Collecting household food scraps and extending kerbside rubbish and recycling collections to rural communities are just two ideas the council is seeking feedback on as part of a review of its Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

Collecting household food scraps and extending kerbside rubbish and recycling collections to rural communities are just two ideas the council is seeking feedback on as part of a review of its Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

The council is required to have a Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP) setting out how the Far North District will manage and minimise its waste over the next six years. The current Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2017-2023 is now due for review.

The focus of the current plan is on reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. One way of achieving this is by co-funding the EcoSolutions waste minimisation education programme that provides waste minimisation education to schools, businesses and community groups throughout Northland.

The council is now seeking feedback on community priorities for managing and minimising waste. A key question is how waste minimisation should be funded? Currently, waste services are funded through a combination of fees paid by users, council rates and government waste levies. Should this model continue?

The Government has already set future priorities for waste management and introduced changes that have had significant impacts on the waste industry. The Government is also considering mandating the provision of standardised kerbside recycling and food scrap collections to all urban areas. Should current kerbside collections in the Far North be expanded?

Consultation on the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan is an important piece of work that will help the council evolve waste services to meet the needs of Far North communities and government waste minimisation goals. Consultation on the Waste Management and Minimisation Plan opened this week and will close on 6 March.
