Kaitaia dog shelter to be extended

Additional kennels will be built at the District Council’s existing dog shelter in Kaitaia to ensure it continues to adhere to the Animal Welfare Act, Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations, and the Code of Welfare for dogs.

Additional kennels will be built at the District Council’s existing dog shelter in Kaitaia to ensure it continues to adhere to the Animal Welfare Act, Animal Welfare (Care and Procedures) Regulations, and the Code of Welfare for dogs.

The decision to extend the facility was made during the Council’s meeting on 29 August. It followed an earlier resolution in June to review Council plans to build new dog shelters at Kaitaia and Ngāwhā after cost estimates significantly exceeded the existing budget.

A report was presented to Councillors on 29 August in public exclusion. It made several recommendations, including that construction of two new facilities at Kaitaia and Ngāwhā should go ahead.

Elected members instead approved the construction of 24 kennels adjacent to the existing Bonnets Road shelter in Kaitaia and asked the Council CEO to re-examine the location of a new Southern Animal Care Facility at Ngāwhā.

A new report will be presented to elected members at a 3 October Council meeting. This will be the final meeting of the current Council before local body elections on 12 October.
