Kerikeri Rd rehabilitation work hits halfway mark

Work to upgrade a section of Kerikeri Road has reached the half-way mark and the project is on target for completion as planned by 18 November.

Work to upgrade a section of Kerikeri Road has reached the half-way mark and the project is on target for completion as planned by 18 November.

Work to lay 200mm of hot mix (asphaltic concrete) began yesterday on the first half of Kerikeri Road to be rehabilitated. The new tarmac is due to be completed today (Friday 4 November). Milling machinery will begin removing the road surface on the opposite side of the road from Monday.

Traffic controls will remain in place for the remainder of the project while crews are working, meaning only one-way traffic can travel into Kerikeri between 7am and 7pm weekdays. From Monday, drivers will be directed along the newly upgraded lane. Those exiting Kerikeri during construction times will continue to be diverted to the Heritage Bypass and Waipapa Road to join State Highway 10 at Waipapa.

Traffic controls at Waipapa roundabout will continue to be applied at peak traffic times to help improve flows. This has prevented a repeat of unacceptably long tailbacks seen along Waipapa Road when the detour was first adopted. Commuters are advised to continue factoring in longer travel times to exit Kerikeri or to alter their travel plans until the rehabilitation project is completed.

Residents are reminded that all Kerikeri Road businesses remain open. Traffic controls will again be repositioned this weekend to provide close to normal access to The Old Packhouse Market via its existing concrete slipway. Traffic control staff will be on site to ensure traffic runs smoothly and that there is easy access to all other businesses along the 550-meter section of road. Drivers who want to visit Kerikeri Road businesses within the construction area are urged to ask traffic control staff to assist. They will ensure motorists get to their required destination and out again as quickly as possible.

The three-week, $1.2 million project will see Kerikeri Road resurfaced from outside the Old Packhouse Market to near the intersection with Maraenui Road. The aim is to provide a road surface that requires minimal ongoing maintenance for another 25 years.
