Fifty-seven people became New Zealand citizens on Monday at Memorial Hall in Kaikohe during a ceremony officiated by Kahika Moko Tepania and witnessed by Far North District councillors.

Around 200 friends and whānau of the new Kiwis attended the event, which was supported by council staff opening the ceremony with a mihimihi and waiata.

Citizenship ceremonies require each new citizen to take an oath or affirmation of allegiance to New Zealand and King Charles III, which is officially witnessed by Kahika Tepania.

The new citizens have come from all corners of the world, including Australia, Tonga, South Africa, Switzerland, UK, USA, Zambia and India.

Each new citizen was presented with a commemorative book provided by the Department of Internal Affairs that acknowledges the commitment new citizens make to New Zealand. Choice (Whiriwhiria) - The New Zealand citizenship story features stories of people who have chosen to become New Zealand citizens and includes information on New Zealand citizenship.
