New pump track coming to Awanui

Families and tamariki can look forward to a new pump track in Awanui with consent issued, plans completed and construction underway. This will be the third pump track in Te Hiku with two that opened earlier this year one in Kaitāia and Ahipara.

Families and tamariki can look forward to a new pump track in Awanui with consent issued, plans completed and construction underway. This will be the third pump track in Te Hiku with two that opened earlier this year one in Kaitāia and Ahipara.

Excavation work began early this month with plans to have it completed over the next four weeks, in time for the summer and Christmas school holiday break.

Unlike skateboard bowls and cycle tracks, pump tracks are designed for bikes, scooters and skateboards and can be ridden simply by ‘pumping’ rather than pedalling to create momentum and flow around the track. The curved surfaces are sealed with asphalt, making the tracks highly durable.

This is an addition to the recently upgraded park, including upgraded playgroup features designed to suit all age groups. Additions to the wider park also include gas-fired public barbeques, renovated public toilets, picnic tables, seating, swings, climbing towers and slides.

Te Hiku o te Ika Revitalisation Project has seen the installation of public artworks, playground equipment, cycle tracks, public seating, water fountains, barbeques and much more in Kaitāia, Awanui and Ahipara. The community-led project is funded by Kānoa – the government’s Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit – with support from the council and Te Hiku Community Board.
