An Open Genealogy Day at Procter Library has been hailed a success after 16 enthusiastic genealogists took part in exploring the library's resources and discovering how to extend their own family history research projects.

Due to the positive response, the library has announced plans to establish a regular genealogy group.

The 1 June event attracted people eager to discover how using the library can help unlock secrets of their family history. They were assisted by three experienced genealogists from Kaitāia and a local history specialist, who answered participants’ questions. They showcased how to make the most of resources like key historical books and online databases (such as ancestry.com) to expand their genealogy research.

Te Ahu Museum Trust helped make the Open Genealogy Day a reality and provide the expertise of local genealogists.

Genealogy enthusiasts can gather at Procter Library between 10am and 12 noon on the first Thursday of each month to discuss and continue their research. The next meeting will be held on Thursday 6 July.
