Work is underway to solve an ongoing flooding issue on a Far North street that has plagued residents for several years.
Marreine Place, on the Karikari Peninsula, regularly floods during heavy rain at its southern end where it borders a Department of Conservation (DOC) wetland. Rising water levels in the wetland and ground levels of the road prevent stormwater moving away from the area without intervention.
Representatives from DOC, Far North District Council contractor Haigh Workman, and Far North Waters Alliance visited the site last month to look at all the options. Far North Waters is an alliance between the district council and Ventia for the management of water assets.
Far North Waters Alliance will work with DOC to develop a sustainable engineering solution, which is expected to be confirmed within the next three months. The aim is to complete work during the summer when ground conditions are more suitable for construction work.
This week, residents on the street received a letter from Far North District Council and Far North Waters Alliance outlining the plans for the road and acknowledging the urgency to resolve the issue.
Far North Waters Alliance will carry out the work once all the relevant approvals are in place.
