Safer speed limits coming for Moerewa

Work is underway to implement new speed limits in Moerewa township. The changes are set to come into effect on 15 February, once new speed-limit signs have been installed.

Work is underway to implement new speed limits in Moerewa township. The changes are set to come into effect on 15 February, once new speed-limit signs have been installed.

The speed limit changes are part of a wider review being undertaken of all district roads in the Far North by Far North District Council and Northland Transportation Alliance (NTA). This was triggered by the Government’s Road to Zero National Strategy.

“The Government’s strategy is to set safe and appropriate speeds on our roads with the aim of reducing serious harm and fatal crashes,” says NTA Speed Limits Manager, Shawn Baker. "The new speed limits complement measures undertaken in 2022 within the town centre to slow traffic with the installation of raised platforms in areas where speed is an issue so that it is safe for all road users.”

Changes in Moerewa include a 40km/h speed limit within residential areas and new 30km/h speed limits around schools. Staff from NTA and contractor Ventia are now installing new speed limit signs.

Decisions on new speed limits for Moerewa were informed by feedback provided by the community and technical assessments required under the Setting of Speed Limits Rule and followed a review of district roads in the Kaitāia-Awaroa and Broadwood-Kohukohu catchments, Moerewa urban area, and Te Oneroa-a-Tōhe (Ninety Mile Beach) launched in 2021.

At the time, the council made available a Statement of Proposal and technical information to the community and promoted the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed changes via the Far North District Council website, in newspaper advertising and to stakeholder groups. A community drop-in session attended by key staff was also held in Moerewa. You can get more information on this speed review on the council’s website.

The council is now reviewing speed limits on district roads in the Bay of Islands-Kerikeri area east of State Highway 10. This encompasses Kerikeri, Ōpua, Paihia, Waitangi, Haruru, and Whangaroa. Go to the Speed limit review 2022 page on the council’s website to find out more.
