On Tuesday last week (11 April), Te Hiku Community Board held its monthly meeting in Kaitāia.

During the meeting, held at Kaitāia’s Te Ahu Centre, the board granted over $13,000 to two community groups. The grants were $3,930 to Doubtless Bay and Professional Women towards expenses to host its National Conference in Kaitāia.

A total of $9,324 was granted to six local sports groups towards travel costs as part of the Rural Travel Fund. The Rural Travel Fund comes from Sport New Zealand and applications are then assessed with Sport Northland Community Connectors, with funding recommendations approved by community boards for distribution.

The six sports groups to gain funding this round were:

  • $3,000 to Te Rarawa JMB
  • $2,500 to Aupōuri Rugby Football Club
  • $2,000 to Mangōnui Netball
  • $1,200 towards Ahipara Boardriders
  • $425 to Pompallier Catholic School
  • $200 to Far North Phoenix Netball.

The board also recommended that the council approve ground leases to Fire and Emergency New Zealand at Rangiputa and Pukenui. You can find out more here on this proposal.

In other business, the board agreed to reallocate a new dry vault toilet originally destined for Mokorau in Ahipara to Unahi Wharf Park. It will replace a temporary toilet that has been in this location for a number of years.

The board also heard a presentation from Shirley Williams, Manager of the Kaitāia Saturday Market, as the market lease is up for renewal. The board recommended that the council approve the license to occupy the carpark for the weekly Saturday markets.

A project update from Andrea Panther of the Kaitāia Business Association on the Kaitāia Town Square was also presented to the board.

The next Te Hiku Community Board Meeting is on the 9 May 2023 at Te Ahu.
