Upgraded Te Hiku netball courts open

The newly upgraded Kaitāia Netball courts were officially blessed and opened yesterday (Thursday 8 June), marking a significant milestone for the community as they prepare for the 2023 netball season.

The newly upgraded Kaitāia Netball courts were officially blessed and opened yesterday (Thursday 8 June), marking a significant milestone for the community as they prepare for the 2023 netball season.

The ceremony was attended by members of the Mangōnui Netball Association, local councillors, representatives from contractors, Tarmac and Hoskin Civil, as well as members of the public and enthusiastic local school children.

The extensive upgrade of the netball courts included the reconstruction of eight full-size courts, along with the installation of new lighting, hoops, and fencing. Despite facing numerous challenges due to the recent weather events that have affected several projects across Northland, the project team successfully managed the risks and pressures to ensure that the courts were ready for the start of the netball season. While some final works are still pending, they will be scheduled around the training and game times, allowing the netball season to proceed as planned.

The original courts, which were initially constructed in the 1980s, have long served as the home of the Mangōnui Netball Centre, overseen by the Mangōnui Netball Association Inc.

Representatives of the Mangōnui Netball Association said they are thrilled for the upcoming netball season and anticipate the return of both children and the wider community to the revitalised courts.

The netball courts are next to the new Te Hiku Sports Hub, which is scheduled to open later this year. Together, these facilities will enhance sports opportunities and promote a vibrant and active lifestyle in Kaitāia.
