We maintain a range of facilities for Far North residents and visitors, including playgrounds, sports fields, swimming pools, walkways and reserves. We also own and maintain toilets, wharves and pontoons, cemeteries, libraries, community halls and housing for the elderly.

Awanui, gateway to the Far North, has been nominated for Best Tiny Town and Best Loo at the annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards.

Awanui, gateway to the Far North, has been nominated for Best Tiny Town and Best Loo at the annual Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards.

The village on the intersection of State Highway 1 and State Highway 10 has had a major community-led facelift after years of planning and development by residents, iwi and local businesses.

The common goal was to make Awanui an attractive destination for people to stop and enjoy, rather than just a place to drive through.

A shovel-ready project, its core funding came from central government’s COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund, as the council’s consenting process had already been completed and approved.

The winners of both awards will be announced on Thursday 9 November 2023.
