VIDEO - Walkers warned of slip danger on Ōpua-Paihia trail

Hikers are warned to avoid a hazardous stretch of this popular track after recent slips blocked a large section. Watch our video for detailed directions on the detour.

Hikers using the ever-popular Ōpua to Paihia coastal walkway are warned to avoid a hazardous stretch of the trail at the Ōpua end after recent slips blocked a large section of track.

Since the slips, engineering assessments have found that the hillside rock is weakened and extremely unstable. This section of the track is now closed and should not be used as another slip could occur at any time.

A detour along Richardson Street now diverts walkers around the closed section of track. Temporary signs indicating the detour are in place and will be replaced in coming days with more permanent and prominent signage.

Walkers approaching the area from the Ōpua end of the track can access the boardwalk as normal, but should then divert up steps to the left. Hike up a short track to Richardson Street and continue about 200m along the road. At the end of the cul-de-sac, look for a sign for Lemons Bay. Take the short downhill track to merge back onto the coastal track heading towards Paihia. If you’re walking from Paihia, take the same detour in reverse. The rest of the Ōpua to Paihia walkway is unaffected and remains open. Enjoy your hike!

Watch our video for detailed directions on the detour.
