Temporary repairs to reopen West Coast Rd today

A significant slip that reduced a section of West Coast Road between Kohukohu and Panguru to one lane yesterday will be temporarily repaired and reopened by the end of today.

**UPDATE 4.30pm 14 July**

A culvert running under West Coast Road at the site of this week’s slip has delayed work to reopen the road to two-lane traffic. The culvert is being replaced today (Thursday) and work to reinstate the road and widen it to two lanes will continue Friday. 180m3 of aggregate has already been laid and the aim is to have works completed tomorrow. The site will continue to be monitored and topped up as required.

A significant slip that reduced a section of West Coast Road between Kohukohu and Panguru to one lane yesterday will be temporarily repaired and reopened by the end of today.

Immediate repairs carried out yesterday ensured that one lane of the road was reopened and safe for road users with a 30km/h speed restriction in place overnight.

Council contractor, Fulton Hogan, is back on site today (Wednesday 13 July) to rebuild the opposite lane where the subsidence is most serious. The aim is to have both lanes reopened by the end of the day. This section of West Coast Road will remain unsealed at least until the summer construction season while engineers investigate the site thoroughly and permanent repairs can be designed. Reduced speed limits will be in place while the section of road remains unsealed.
