VIDEO - What's next for the Mangōnui Waterfront?
Check out plans for the second phase of the Mangōnui Waterfront Improvement Project which is due to begin soon.
The next phase of the Mangōnui Waterfront Improvement Project starts soon. Phase Two will create additional parking at the wharf area opposite the Mangōnui War Memorial Hall.
A new concrete deck will be constructed in the area between the wharf and the existing car park next to the famous fish and chip shop. Up to seven large vehicle parks will be constructed. This will take large vehicle parking off the main road and allow tourists buses to deliver visitor groups to the doorstep of local businesses.
Phase One of the project proved to be a hit with locals when completed in May last year. It included a 364-metre extension of the waterfront boardwalk, and construction of a new jetty and pontoon at Thomas Street for better access to the southern end of the town. The developments have transformed the town’s connection to the harbour, while improving safety for pedestrians, cyclists, motorists, fishers and boaties.
