Not sure what can be recycled in the Far North District?
When in doubt, check before you throw it out. Incorrect items can contaminate recycling and may result in recyclable materials being sent to landfill.
Why can't everything with a recycling symbol be recycled?
A recycling symbol does not automatically mean an item can be recycled in the Far North.
For an item to be recycled, there must be a processor willing to accept and reuse the material. Some materials are currently too difficult or expensive to recycle economically. Please check the list of accepted materials before placing items in recycling bins.
Changes to recycling of coloured #1 (PET) plastics
From mid-July 2025 coloured 1 (PET) plastics will not be accepted at council waste transfer and recycling stations for recycling. Disposing of coloured 1 (PET) plastics will attract the same charge as other household waste going to landfill.
