Council acknowledges passing of Blue Newport

Far North District Council acknowledges the passing of Robert (Blue) Lionel Newport, a respected Ōkaihau community member whose lifelong service made a lasting contribution to the Far North.

Blue, who passed away on 29 July 2026, was a long-time resident of Ōkaihau and a former teacher at Ōkaihau College, where he supported and encouraged generations of young people. He was also recognised with a Far North District Council Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025 for his outstanding service to the community.

Blue gave generously of his time through a range of community roles, including serving as Chairperson of the Te Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail Charitable Trust for eight years. In this role, he helped support the development and ongoing success of one of the Far North's key community and visitor assets, contributing to local pride, tourism and economic opportunity.

During the Extraordinary Council meeting on 4 August, Kahika Moko Tepania acknowledged Blue's passing and recognised the significant contribution he made to the district.

A service to celebrate Mr Newport’s life will be held at Ōkaihau Community Hall at 2.00pm today, 6 August 2026.

As a mark of respect, the Far North District Council flag was flown at half-mast on Thursday 6 August in honour of Blue's service and dedication to the Far North community.

Far North District Council extends its sincere condolences to Blue's wife Lynley, his children and grandchildren, friends, and all those whose lives he touched.

E te rangatira, e moe i roto i te rangimārie / esteemed leaders rest in peace.
