Top award for manager in Building Services

A recent industry gathering in Auckland was especially significant for Far North District Council’s Manager – Quality, Katie Waiti-Dennis.

Professionals from across the country applauded when Katie was announced Future Skills Student of the Year at the 4 May Building Officials Institute of New Zealand (BOINZ) symposium.

The Future Skills Academy grants the award to a student enrolled in its New Zealand Diploma in Building Surveying. It says Katie stood out for the leadership and work ethic she’s demonstrated in her studies and work life. “She is highly regarded for her professionalism, technical capability and commitment to excellence.”

As part of her many responsibilities, Katie makes sure that our Building Consents Authority (BCA) team has policies, procedures and systems that allow them to work to the highest standards. This ensures they meet regulations and keep their industry accreditation.

Hilary Sumpter, the council’s Group Manager - Delivery and Operations, says, “Katie’s commitment to her team, clients and industry mean she is highly respected by other professionals. She goes beyond the call of duty in everything she does.”

Katie recently embarked on a major research project to develop a tool for her team. The result was a reference guide they use when determining which industry standards are applied to the consent decisions they make.

The tool has now been shared with other councils.
