Hourly access on Waikare Road for weekend repairs
A section of Waikare Road will be closed intermittently this weekend for repairs, only briefly reopening on the hour to allow traffic to pass.
The repairs and associated road closures are timed to limit disruption the following weekend when the popular ‘Rumble in Russell’ event is expected to draw crowds and increase traffic in the area. The affected section is unsealed and approximately 10km from the Kawakawa intersection.
Road closures will start from 7am on Saturday 20 June and run to 5pm Sunday 21 June, unless work is completed earlier. The road will reopen to let traffic through on the hour for a short time from 8am and then every hour on the hour following that.
Work reinstating this section of Waikare Road affected by slips is ongoing and currently ahead of schedule. With all piles installed, works this weekend will include digging out between the installed piles, carting material, installing a pipeline, as well as laying metal and placing geofoam.
Motorist should expect delays and plan accordingly, if using this route.
Traffic management will prioritise emergency vehicles at all times. Some toilet facilities will be available to the public and anyone requiring this should speak to the onsite crew to be directed appropriately.
Anyone requiring urgent access through the site (for example for hospital appointments), should ask to speak to the Site Supervisor.
