Detour in place as Fern Flat Rd slip investigated

An emergency road closure on Fern Flat Road near Kaitāia is now in place while a significant slip affecting a section of the rural road is investigated to determine what repairs will be required.

Temporary traffic management was put in place yesterday and signs will be located at the Iwitaua, Otangaroa and Oruru road intersections warning drivers of the closure.

Road users are asked to avoid the area and use designated detours. The road will remain closed until the site investigation has established the scope of the work. Updates will be provided to residents as more information becomes available following the site investigation.

Motorists travelling through the area should allow extra time for their journeys and follow the recommended detour routes:

• From SH10 at Kāeo: Travel towards Taipa, then turn left onto Oruru Road for 11.6km. Turn left onto Kohumaru Road for 1.3km, then turn right onto Fern Flat Road.
• From SH1 south of Kaitāia: Travel south on SH1, then turn left onto Fairburn Road for 10.4km. Continue onto Peria Road for 6.5km, then turn left onto Oruru Road for 2.9km. Turn right onto Kohumaru Road for 1.3km, then turn right onto Fern Flat Road.
• From SH1 north of Mangamuka / Iwitaua Road: Travel north on SH1 from Iwitaua Road, Mangamuka, for 31km, then turn right onto Fairburn Road. Continue for 10.4km, then continue onto Peria Road for 6.5km. Turn left onto Oruru Road for 2.9km, then turn right onto Kohumaru Road for 1.3km, then turn right onto Fern Flat Road.
