Planting the seeds for Rangitoto Reserve’s future

The council is inviting the community to have its say on a draft Reserve Management Plan for Rangitoto Reserve, a culturally and historically significant site on the Hihi Peninsula opposite Mangōnui.

The plan has been developed in partnership with a local hapū working group, including representatives from Ngāti Ruaiti and Te Matarahurahu. It sets out a long-term vision for protecting and managing the reserve’s cultural, historical and environmental values. The draft plan also includes proposed management areas that would see native vegetation established across large parts of the reserve.

Rangitoto Reserve includes Rangitoto Pā and was classified as a Historic Reserve in October 2024. The site contains visible archaeological features, including terracing, kūmara pits and midden.

The reserve does not have direct road access but can be accessed from the sea. The draft plan does not propose any immediate changes to public access or the reserve’s current use.

The council is encouraging community members to review the draft plan and share their views by completing an online survey. Feedback can also be submitted by email to submissions@fndc.govt.nz, by post, or by dropping off a hard-copy survey at any FNDC service centre or library. People can also indicate if they'd like to speak to their submission at a public hearing before Te Hiku Community Board.

Feedback closes on Monday 16 November.
