Traffic detour for Recreation Street reinstatement works

Kaikohe road users are advised of a temporary detour that will be in place from Monday 28 September while council contractor United Civil reinstates the large concrete raised pedestrian crossing on Recreation Street.

The work is expected to take 11 days and is part of the wider Kaikohe water and wastewater upgrade, which has been underway across the town. Motorists are asked to follow the signed detour while the mahi is carried out.

Raihara Street, between Memorial Avenue and Recreation Street, will be open to residents only. Other road users will be directed via Memorial Avenue and Station Road before rejoining Recreation Street.

One lane of Recreation Street will remain open, with traffic management in place.

Access will be maintained for emergency services, while access to Papa Hawaiki, the freedom camping area and dump station will remain available.

The Kaikohe water and wastewater upgrade is designed to improve the reliability and resilience of the town’s water and wastewater networks, reduce wastewater overflows and support future growth. The upgrades have been developed with input from mana whenua, local organisations, homeowners and residents.

The temporary detour is part of the final reinstatement mahi associated with this stage of the project and will help return the affected areas to normal use for the Kaikohe community.
