Water services information disclosure

Far North District Council provides drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services to the district.

From 1 August 2026, the Commerce Commission requires councils and other water service providers to publish standard information about how water services are managed, what they cost, and what customers are charged. These requirements are set out in the Water Services Information Disclosure Determination 2026 .

Who provides your water services

Far North District Council is responsible for providing drinking water, wastewater and stormwater services in the district. For the purposes of the Water Services Information Disclosure 2026, Council is the regulated supplier.

Dividend Policy

As required by clause 4.6 of the Water services Information Disclosure Determination 2026, Far North District Council is a unitary authority and does not pay dividends. Accordingly, Council does not have a dividends policy for the supply of water services.

Our policy for funding growth

This section summarises that approach as it applies to water services, as required by clause 4.7 of the determination.

Council’s policy is that the cost of providing additional network capacity to support growth is met by those creating the demand through development contributions, rather than by existing ratepayers.

The following charges or obligations may be payable to Council, or to a related party of Council, for a new connection or other growth:

  • Development contributions payable on developments and subdivisions to fund the additional demand that new development places on infrastructure. Full details are on Council’s Development Contributions page.
  • Connection charges payable when a new connection is made to the drinking water or wastewater network, or when an existing connection is altered.
  • Infrastructure vested in Council by developers applies where a developer builds network infrastructure and transfers it to Council, rather than paying a contribution.

Charges for water services

Council's current water services charges are set out in the following documents, which together contain the information required under clauses 4.8 and 4.9 of the Water Services Information Disclosure Determination 2026.

The Council adopted its Annual Plan 2026-27 on 25 June 2025 which included information on fees and charges and the rating impact statement for 2026-27. As a regulated supplier, the Council provides information on charges for its water supply and wastewater services at the single service level in the attached spreadsheet.

Infrastructure Funding and Financing levies

Disclosed under clause 4.10 of the Water Services Information Disclosure Determination 2026.

An Infrastructure Funding and Financing levy is a charge collected under the Infrastructure Funding and Financing Act 2020 on behalf of a special purpose vehicle that has funded infrastructure.

Far North District Council does not collect any Infrastructure Funding and Financing levy.
