First phase of inspiring artworks to begin

The skate ramp in Kerikeri Domain will be getting a facelift from next Thursday (8 December) with a contemporary Māori design promoting a positive message for youth.

The mural begins four phases of artwork planned for the revitalisation of Kerikeri Domain with more artworks to be added to the basketball court and new playground at a later date. All will incorporate positive messages for youth.

The design for the skatepark is titled Kia Piki te Ora, a phrase used to wish someone good health. Artist Hone Tiatoa of Impact Northland designed the mural and will work with two other artists to apply it to the exterior of the skate ramp. Another design is planned for inside the skate bowl.

The artist’s statement about the skatepark mural design is: I roto i te pouri, te marama e whiti ana, heoi kihai i mau i te pouri. (The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness could not overcome it.)

There may be some disruption for skate park users accessing the skate ramp while the artwork is applied to the exterior of the ramp. Painting of the mural will only go ahead next week if the weather is favourable.
