America's Cup FanZones

Jump on board Te Waka and host an America’s Cup FanZone!

The America’s Cup races start on 6 March 2021 and will take place every two days until the first team wins nine races. The Far North District has been asked if we want to host official America’s Cup FanZones in March 2021.  We think this is a great opportunity for communities to get behind Emirates Team New Zealand!

We anticipate venues such as schools, town halls, sailing clubs and marae across the district becoming buzzing venues for watching the races. Council wants to support communities to take the lead. Communities can use the event as a fundraising opportunity to support local projects/charities.

Official FanZones are recognised by America’s Cup Events and may have sponsors attend in a promotional capacity – they may also be visited by news crews, keen to see how even those in more remote areas of New Zealand are sharing in the excitement of the America’s Cup.

What you need to host an official FanZone?

  • Capacity to site a big screen
  • Fast and reliable connectivity (WiFi or 4G) for broadcast
  • Adequate parking facilities
  • Publicly accessible/welcoming venue
  • Capacity for minimum 100 attendees
  • Potential local sponsors
  • Clearly identified potential recipients/projects of any funds raised
  • Evidence of strong community support for hosting and support of Emirates Team New Zealand’s bid to retain the America’s Cup.

While Council and the America’s Cup Events team is unable to provide funding for FanZones, we may be able to assist through partnership with sourcing audio visual gear, temporary licencing of premises and traffic management plans for the FanZone events.  We are also happy to help host communities with funding applications.

Council is accepting self-nominations from communities and groups wanting to host FanZones in the Far North District from 18-29 May.  Council staff will then assess the nominations to ensure they meet the minimum criteria set by America’s Cup Events and are spread across the district.  Where more than one nomination is received from a town or area, groups will be encouraged to work together on a joint nomination.

The final list of nominated FanZones within the Far North District will be sent to America’s Cup Events by 14 June 2020, who will make the final decision of host venues with Emirate Team New Zealand as host team and sponsors of the America’s Cup 2021.

There is nothing to stop you hosting America’s Cup viewing parties in a private capacity. Council is not able offer assistance or resources for private viewing parties.
